You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”

James Baldwin

We believe great literature can have a powerful impact on our lives. It can offer escapism yet also inspires self-reflection; it gives us a view of the world through someone else's eyes, yet can also reveal to us the most personal thoughts and feelings we hold dear. We believe that great literature is not measured in stanzas or metaphors but in the way it makes us feel, that's why all our courses and literary experiences are built on the foundations of our Shared Reading model – reading together, with purpose, listening to stories and poems read aloud and sharing our thoughts and ideas about them.

Whether your interest in Shared Reading is professional or personal, you'll find a course that will help you connect with great literature.

Read to Lead

Our flagship professional programmeRead to Lead, is a total immersion in Shared Reading, providing a comprehensive introduction to the experience and environment of The Reader's model. This intensive course is the starting point for all our staff and volunteers but we also hold regular open courses for members of the public who are interested in bringing Shared Reading into their workplace or community. Since 2008, over 4,000 people have attended a Read to Lead course across the UK and beyond.

Short Courses & Workshops

We also deliver a variety of short courses, ranging from 12 week programmes to one-day workshops that provide an opportunity for group members, volunteers and those completely new to The Reader to come together and connect over great literature.
