Join Brian Nellist – co-editor of The Reader magazine and ‘godfather’ of The Reader – for his latest ten week course in Birkenhead, exploring the pursuit of pleasure as well as the occasional perils that a trip away can bring.

Release from the daily grind, what fun! Yes, replies a warming voice, but holiday is often a time of accidents and minor mishaps. The everyday may confine us but at least it keeps us reliably safe. The longing for a life of permanent pleasure is only a dream from which responsibility retrieves us all too soon. But change, risk and adventure  are what really transform us.

Over the ten weeks from Monday 8 January to Monday 12 March we’ll read literature that touches upon the subject of holiday and festivity, including Milton’s Comus, Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse, Elizabeth Taylor’s A Wreath of Roses and Iris Murdoch’s The Sea, The Sea.

This course follows an earlier one from Autumn 2017, but there’s no need to have been part of that course to join this one. Tea, coffee, biscuits and good company all provided!

Places cost £45 / £25 concessions (The Reader members, volunteers, unemployed, retired, students).
