We are now over 6 months into a new family reading project in Liverpool. With the support of Lloyds TSB Foundation and LCVS, we have been delivering a number of weekly storytime groups for children under 5 with their parents or carers in and around the Everton area. It has been great to work with local families and parents are already reporting increased confidence levels now when they read with their own children at home.
Favourite stories have included Mrs Pirate by Nick Sharratt and The Runaway Train by Jess Stockham, as well as old favourites such as The Owl and the Pussycat and The Three Little Pigs! Parents are also being encouraged to read for pleasure for themselves and we have been delivering a number of shared reading groups to meet this need in our efforts to embed a culture of reading for pleasure in every family home in Everton. Families involved in the Everton project are also eligible to receive free books via the Thrive at 5 book scheme that is being funded by LCVS.
The Reader magazine offers a mix of new poetry and fiction, classic and neglected works and interviews with leading literary figures.
