summary

As Director, Jane’s job is to represent The Reader Organisation in public, spreading the word about the power of shared reading. She is an engaging and moving speaker and enjoys meeting people at Festivals, Conferences and Events. Recently, she has taken part in a debate with Camilla Batmanjediha and Koestler Trust at the Southbank Centre, addressed a group of end-of-life healthcare practitioners at their annual conference in Leicestershire and been Keynote speaker at Boek.be's Mind The Book Festival in Antwerp.

She enjoys reading, through our Masterclass programme, with members of our shared reading community. Jane also develops new partnerships and projects and is the ‘vision’ lead for our project at Calderstones Mansion House.

In November 2013, Jane was launched as an Ashoka UK Fellow. Read her personal Story of Change on Ashoka UK's website.

In March 2014, Jane was appointed by Liverpool Learning Partnership to run the City of Readers campaign alongside her role as Director of The Reader Organisation. City of Readers aims to raise the profile of reading in the city and develop a new generation of readers, as the importance of reading for pleasure has been recognised as influencing social mobility and development.

quote

“No one could ask for a better end to the week. The CWP group are a wonderful bunch of people and I find the reading group exhilarating. As for St Anne’s no one could ask for a better job than sharing books with the Best Boys. I love piecing things together and have made a bookcase quilt for some newly married friends.

Jane’s Recommended Read:

Just lately I’ve been having some really good conversations with  groups reading this poem by Thomas Dekker,

Sweet Content

Art thou poor, yet hast thou golden slumbers?
O sweet content!
Art thou rich, yet is thy mind perplex'd?
O punishment!
Dost thou laugh to see how fools are vex'd
To add to golden numbers golden numbers?
O sweet content! O sweet, O sweet content!
Work apace, apace, apace, apace;
Honest labour bears a lovely face;
Then hey nonny nonny--hey nonny nonny!

Canst drink the waters of the crisped spring?
O sweet content!
Swim'st thou in wealth, yet sink'st in thine own tears?
O punishment!
Then he that patiently want's burden bears,
No burden bears, but is a king, a king!
O sweet content! O sweet, O sweet content!
Work apace, apace, apace, apace;
Honest labour bears a lovely face;
Then hey nonny nonny--hey nonny nonny!
