“I never thought I would have all this confidence that I have got out of it” – shared reading group volunteer

The Reader Organisation provides a range of volunteering opportunities across the UK to be trained as reading group assistants and facilitators, as well as in office admin roles at our bases.

Our biggest and most established volunteering project is on Merseyside, funded by the Big Lottery project, where volunteers have been sharing reading with older people since 2011. The project has created thousands of reading experiences for older people across the region and has been recognised as 'Highly Commended'.

There are also opportunities to be involved assisting shared reading groups in London, North Wales and the South West, and increasingly more opportunities to help us build a centre for reading and wellbeing at Calderstones Mansion House.

Volunteering is recognised as delivering important health and wellbeing benefits. Government health policy highlights its role in:

  • Building social capital, reducing isolation and keeping people active, engaged and independent
  • Creating people-centred services, delivering choice and innovation
  • Enhancing the capacity of preventative care

As well as the wellbeing benefits, 71% of our volunteers have enjoyed having had the opportunity to meet people that they wouldn’t usually meet in their day-to-day lives.
