Meet Heritage Volunteer, Roy ‘I’ve always been interested in history and like speaking to visitors who’ve never been here… about the history of the Mansion House, park and ancient Calder Stones’
The UK’s largest Shared Reading charity celebrates its amazing team of volunteers as part of Volunteers’ Week 2025, Monday 2 June – Sunday 8 June.
NAME: Roy
WHERE DO YOU VOLUNTEER? Liverpool –The Mansion House and Calderstones Park
ROLE: Heritage, including school trips and assisting The Welcome Desk when needed
WHY DID YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER WITH THE READER? I came to The Mansion House as a visitor in May 2023 to find out more about The Reader and what was going on. There I spoke to the Volunteer Manager who asked if I’d be interested in becoming a volunteer.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE? I have always been interested in history and like listening to local visitors who also pass on local history. I like speaking to visitors who have never been to the Mansion House and the park, I give them the full insight and history of the Mansion House, the park and ancient Calder Stones.
I enjoy the school visits too – explaining the history, showing them the Calder Stones and explaining how old the stones are and where they came from and the afternoon session pupils can get involved in an interactive quiz.
Visitors always leave the Heritage site happy and saying they will return with their family and friends.
If you are interested in history and would like to find out more about heritage volunteering at The Reader please visit here. Volunteers receive full training and ongoing support from The Reader.
