‘It is such a happiness when good people get together – and they always do’ – Pam and Keith’s Story

Written by Emma Walsh, 23rd August 2018

Just like Jane Austen's Miss Bates in Emma, we love a good wedding and the season is very much upon us. Since Calderstones Mansion House has played host to many wonderful weddings over the years, we thought it would be nice to hear about some of the happy occasions from the happy couples.

Keith and Pam Wedding 2

Pam Walker and her husband Keith enjoyed their wedding breakfast at Calderstones Mansion House in August 1968.

"My Dad inquired at the house and they said that they had a cancellation in three weeks, so we just went for that. This has always been the family park that we’ve come to. I’ve got a photograph of my Mum, Dad and me here – I would’ve only been about six months old. And I remember going on the boating lake. I've had picnics here with my children and we used to come here to fly kites.

"We had our wedding photographs taken at the back of the Mansion House, where the theatre was. It was really nice in the garden, it was kept lovely and the flowers were in bloom. The weather was nice and the food was good – in the 60s it was quite traditional, you know. I know there was a football match going on that day, maybe Liverpool were playing, as a few guests had transistor radios and were listening to it! It was a lovely day."

Patricia and Keith Sales held their wedding reception at the Mansion House in June 1970. The couple were married at Elm Hall Drive Methodist Church before the wedding party continued at Calderstones Mansion House.

Patricia shared her memories of the special day on the Memory Wall at the Calderstones Mansion House Open Day in 2013. She wrote:

"It was a beautiful, hot summer’s day and everyone who came was very impressed with the venue, especially my husband’s family who weren’t Liverpudlians.

"I have many happy memories of Calderstones and the Mansion House as I lived in Mossley Hill. Later, my husband and I took our children there and they have great memories too."

Wedding celebrations will of course play a big part in the future of the building too and we look forward to welcoming wedding breakfasts and reception parties back to the Mansion House in the coming years.

The Reader is bringing the Mansion House back to life as The International Centre for Shared Reading with reading rooms, a new cafe and a multi-functional space which will be available for hire for performances and family events such as wedding receptions.

While we aren't quite ready to take bookings yet, we'll be releasing more details in Spring 2019. To stay up to date with all the latest news from Calderstones Mansion House, sign up to our newsletter here.
