Jane Davis awarded MBE
Founder and Director of The Reader Organisation, Jane Davis, has been awarded an MBE for her services to Reader Development.
Jane set up the first Get Into Reading group in a small library in Birkenhead with young single mums. This five-week pilot was so successful that it led to the development of a continuous, and growing Get Into Reading project: there are now over 250 Get Into Reading groups meeting weekly across the UK, over 200 of them on Merseyside.
On hearing that she had won this accolade, Jane said:
“I’m delighted to receive this honour on behalf of The Reader Organisation and my colleagues who work with such enthusiasm and dedication to spread the love of reading. Together, we read aloud with over 1000 people each week and this honour celebrates the achievements of those readers, some of whom have overcome the most restricting difficulties to develop a relationship with the written word.”
1000 congratulations to you, Jane!

Jane’s just been on Andy Ball’s breakfast show on Radio Merseyside, talking about the width and breadth of our Reading Revolution, and how she found out about her honour. If you missed it, you’ll be able to listen again on iPlayer from Sunday here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00h5zw0/Andy_Ball_11_06_2011/ (about 2 hours 10 minutes in)
Congratulations – wonderful news!
What a lovely surprise when a friend showed me the echo , splutter splutter, I know more than most what your quite simple idea can do for peoples self worth , etc .
The idea itself is relatively simple but the best ideas are the so called simple ones , but I know how hard you work to put this all together .
I speak for many when I say quite simply THANKS , for giving me a reason to live !”
Jane, along with her Friday morning staff reading group, are on Granada News today, as part of a celebration of people who’ve won honours in the NW: http://www.itv.com/granada/honours-for-local-heroes82982/
Best 27 seconds of TV this year. About time the guy behind Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls got some recognition as well! The memories of gobbling a few of them whilst sitting on my dad’s shoulders at Wigan rugby games came flooding back.
Well done Jane!
Congratulations Jane – This is a wonderful testament to your dedication, hard work & sheer persistence but most of all to TRO
Congratulations!
Congratulations Jane. Being one of the members of your very first reading group I remember with great fondness the inspiration you gave us and the confidence to tackle any books that came our way. Very well done you deserve it.
