New Libraries We Love: The Rural Libraries of Cajamarca

Written by The Reader, 22nd October 2012

At The Reader Organisation, we have a lot of love for libraries - many of our more than 330 weekly Get Into Reading groups take place within libraries across the UK - and to really shout about what makes them such great places to be, we've been running a feature called Libraries We Love on our website for the past 18 months. Our libraries and the books and people within them are a huge part of what make our communities great, and that's precisely why we want to celebrate them by sharing the library love.

It's not just about libraries that are close to home, however - Libraries We Love also highlights some unique and very special libraries and library projects from across the world. The latest Library We Love is situated all the way in Northern Peru - atop the Andes, to be precise. The Rural Libraries of Cajamarca (Las Bibliotecas Rurales de Cajamarca) is a unique library: a community based organisation run entirely by volunteers which loans and transports books across the mountains, to the indigenous population. It's an incredible project with many dedicated people involved in bringing education, literacy, equality and the love of books to isolated communities within the area. The project also has roots here in the UK, as it is supported by Sarah's Rural Library Fund, which was set up in memory of Liverpool librarian Sarah Heery especially to help raise funds for the Rural Libraries Network.

If there's a library that you love, then we'd love you to tell us about it and it may just be featured on Libraries We Love in the future...
