Calderstones Mansion House, Calderstones Park, Liverpool

‘When your ship fails you, your whole world seems to fail you; the world that made you, restrained you, took care of you. It is as if the souls of men floating on an abyss and in touch with immensity had been set free for any excess of heroism, absurdity, or abomination. Of course, as with belief, thought, love, hate, conviction, or even the visual aspect of material things, there are as many shipwrecks as there are men, and in this one there was something abject which made the isolation more complete…’ - Lord Jim, Joseph Conrad

Ever felt yourself cut adrift in life? Need a clear point of direction and landing stage? Want to use great literature to talk about the possibilities and limitations of humanity?

Our latest Short Course for Serious Readers at Calderstones Mansion House this month will explore these matters and much more besides by looking at Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. Join Clare Ellis, The Reader Organisation's Reader-in-Residence for Plus Dane Housing, on Saturday 26th October to venture on an epic journey through the world of Lord Jim, exploring the lights and shadows of the soul when pitted against the vastness of the sea.

Short Courses for Serious Readers are for anyone who loves shared reading and getting a grip on great literature with like-minded company in peaceful surroundings. Led by some brilliant readers, thinkers and teachers, these courses enable you to take a break from life for a while to immerse yourself in great literature together with a group, reading good stuff and feeling good in turn.

As well as reading and exploring a classic, this latest Short Course will give you the chance to enjoy the future International Centre for Reading and Wellbeing at Calderstones Mansion House. An ideal way to spend a Saturday in Autumn.

Places on the course cost £30 including lunch; £15 concessions.
