Storybarn Book of the Month: Saving the Butterfly
Written by Lily Kehoe, 19th June 2025
This month, as part of Refugee Week (16-22 June), we've been taking a look back at one of our favourites from The Reader Bookshelf 2023-24.
Saving the Butterfly by Helen Cooper and Gill Smith invites readers to witness the tender story of two siblings navigating the aftermath of displacement. Rescued from a boat lost in the dark sea, the little brother and his big sister are struggling to rebuild their lives in a new environment. While the little brother begins to find his feet, rediscovering joy and laughter, his sister remains haunted by the ghosts of their past, living in the shadows. The little brother catches a delicate butterfly and brings it to his sister that sparks something profound and magical. The sister finds the courage to step outside and confront her fears that have kept her trapped inside, in order to free the butterfly.

This tale is a beautiful, exploration of loss, recovery and the quiet power of nature to heal. As we approach refugee week and world refugee day on the 20th June, we are reminded that we all deserve the right to be and feel safe. This book offers a gentle entry point for discussions with children about refugee experience, resilience and the importance of kindness in a time of crisis. Perfect for young readers, Saving the Butterfly is a moving reminder of the small steps that can lead to profound change, both for ourselves and for others. A perfect addition to any bookshelf.
