The Reader Organisation at the Manchester Comedy Festival!
Saturday 30/10/10, 5pm, Manchester Comedy Store. £6 full price/£3 concessions
The Reader Organisation? At a Comedy Festival? Whatever next-Sumatran Tiger conservation work?!
Allay your fears dear readers, it’s not a sharp change in direction but merely another string to the bow. This Saturday, Liverpool’s premier improvised comedy group Sticky Floor will be competing in the inaugural Manchester Comedy Festival’s ‘Improv Comedy Tournament’. Four of the best Improv groups from all over the country will be going head to head for the right to be crowned champions and win a cash prize for their designated charity.
Sticky Floor will be representing the ‘Our Read’ project and hoping to bring the bounty back down the M62.
Improv is unlike any other comedy format in that everything you see is made up on the spot from audience suggestions. The improvisers take whatever you shout out and make it funny before your very eyes. Unlike rival Saturday night entertainment, the victor will not be decided by a cruel panel of media manufactured judges but is dependent on the audience’s decision. The tried and tested ‘clap-o-meter’ will be used throughout as a way of recording who was the funniest so this time the power really is in your hands.
J.M. Barrie once claimed that ‘Every time a child says “I don’t believe in fairies” there is a little fairy somewhere that falls down dead’. He went on to state that this could be reversed if people immediately partook in rapturous applause; the noise of the clapping breathing fresh life into the aforementioned former flier.
Whilst it would be churlish to discourage the most conscientious of you who sit at home on Saturday afternoons fervently clapping away to break from your practice, for one weekend only the applause of your hands, your hands, redirected towards a specific Improv group in the Manchester Comedy Store could be raising money for The Reader Organisation instead. You will almost literally be clapping literary pounds.
The show starts at 5:00pm at the Manchester Comedy Store in Deansgate. Tickets for the event can be booked online here or bought over the phone on 0161 839 9595.
It would be great to see you there for what promises to be a night of hilarity and, hopefully, successful fundraising!
