Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain Julia Briggs Memorial Prize 2013

The Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain is searching for writers across the country to enter the third Julia Briggs Memorial Prize Competition.

The prize, intended to celebrate the memory of acclaimed Virginia Woolf scholar and Executive Council member Julia Briggs, as well honouring the work of Virginia Woolf, is open to anyone who can provide a stimulating and thought provoking reply to the following statement:

 ‘I want to give the whole of the present society’ (Diary, Vol. 4, p. 151)
Discuss Woolf’s representation of social and/or political concerns in any of her writings.

The essay should be given a title of the entrant’s choosing, and should be between 2,000 and 2,500 words in length. The essay must be the original work of the named entrant, and previously unpublished in print or any other medium.

The competition will be judged by eminent Woolf scholars Maggie Humm and Anna Snaith, and by Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain Vice-Chair and Woolf biographer Ruth Webb. The winner will receive a cheque for £250, presented at the Virgina Woolf Society of Great Britain's AGM in Central London, early in April 2013, with the winning essay also published in the Virginia Woolf Bulletin.
